"Watching" Documentary Answers to Questions- Blog Post 4

1. What does Thomas Sutcliffe mean when he says the following? "Films need to seduce their audience into long term commitment. While there are many types of seduction, their temptation to go for instant arousal is almost irresistible"
- If the first scenes of a film to not grab the audiences attention and doesn't get them excited to continue watching the film to find out more, then there is little point in showing the rest of the film

2. According to Director Jean Jacques Beineix, what are the risks of "instant arousal"
-The risks are that by showing a good part at the beginning it will cause the audience to begin to form questions, and if those questions aren't answered it can leave the audience feeling confused and not enjoying the film

3. Explain why " a good beginning must make the audience feel that they doesn't know nearly enough yet, sand at the same time make sure that it doesn't know too little"
- The beginning of the film is the time when the film is coming terms with its viewers, setting the tone or genre of the film, which will allow the audience to be able to understand how to react to the film. Along with this by giving the audience just enough but not too little information it will get them excited to continue to watch the film.

4. What does critic Stanley Kauffman describe as the classic opening?
- An Establishing shot of New York City. A close up of a particular building, and then the camera following the building up to a higher window. The camera will then enter through the window pass the office, into a private room where usually the main character would be. It works because it gives the audience an idea of the situation of the main character, their occupation, home town etc.

5. Why is Kyle Coopers title sequence to the film Seven so effective ?
- It is so effective because it says to the audience right away that the film is a thriller and will have you on the edge of your seat like you are at that current moment. Immediately grasping the viewers attention

6. What did Orson Welles want to achieve with his opening to the film "A touch of Evil" ? What did Universal Studios do to it ? Why?
- He wanted the his title sequence to be without a title, credits or music. To give it a lasting effect as it wouldn't be what the audience was expecting. However Universal studios added a title, music and credits because they felt that without it the film didn't work well, they couldn't understand it.

7. What is meant by "a favourite trick of Film Noir "? What is the trick ?
- The "trick" is showing an ending scene at the beginning of the film to give the impression of a new chapter beginning and an older one closing.

8. How does the opening to the film The Shining create suspense?
- It creates suspense by treating the camera almost like a predator that's pursuing this car. This gives the audience a strong impression that the people in the car are travelling in the wrong direction and that as a result of this something bad awaits them.
