The Importance of Sound in Film
 
Sound is used in film to establish tone, atmosphere and to help give the audience clues about the plot, characters and to identify the film genre.

Creating Soundscapes - Terminology

Wild track - sound recorder removes extra sound in recording

Ambient Sound - original footage sound

Diegetic - sounds actors can hear whilst filming

Non-diegetic - the sounds added after production

Score - composed piece, usually orchestral

Voiceover - narrating sound

Dialogue - more than one person talking

Dubbing - new voices (foreign language films)

Foley - extra sound

Synchronous - music matches what we're watching

Asynchronous - music does not match mood/image

Sound Bridge - links two scenes

Sound Motif - sounds pop up when character comes
